N.C. State A.D. Says School To Honor Lorenzo Charles

June 29, 2011 /

N.C. State University says it plans to honor former basketball star Lorenzo Charles in a number of ways.

“We are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Lorenzo Charles, a Wolfpack hero,” said athletic director, Debbie Yow in a statement. “The Wolfpack Family mourns today as we remember his athletic accomplishments, his excellent character and his winning dunk in the 1983 National Championship game. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during his most difficult time.”

Here are the several ways the athletic department plans to honor Charles:

  • Adopt a commemorative patch for use on the men’s basketball uniforms for the 2011-12 season.
  • Recognize the contributions of Lorenzo at the Football Home Opener v. Liberty (All-American Day) on September 3rd, with a video. Lorenzo Charles will headline the recognition of our Wolfpack All-Americans in all varsity sports.
  • Recognize Lorenzo during the James A. Naismith Sportsmanship Award ceremony at the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium on Wednesday evening, June 29th, sponsored by the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.
  • Post on GoPack.com a story honoring Lorenzo, accompanied by a photo gallery and highlight video.
  • A potential endowment in Lorenzo Charles’ name for the Men’s Basketball program through the Wolfpack Club. This idea will be discussed with the family upon their availability. When fully endowed, the Lorenzo Charles Scholarship Endowment would pay the scholarship costs for a student-athlete at NC State.
  • The Bell Tower is light every year on March 7 as way to recognize all of the members of the NC State community that have passed.

Athletic officials say funeral arrangements will be posted online at gopack.com, once the family has completed those details.
