April 20, 2011 /

LONG BEACH, Calif.—The California State University, Long Beach, cheerleading squad has forfeited its national title and the coach has been fired because a non-student competed with the team.

The Long Beach team won the National Cheerleaders Association Small Coed Division I championship title early this month at the Collegiate Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Coach Eric Anderson joined the team in 2001, after working with cheer squads at the University of Michigan and University of Nevada, Reno. He’s won more than 30 national championships and was national coach of the year nominee for the National High School Cheerleading Federation.

A school spokeswoman told the Long Beach Press Telegram Anderson was fired for allowing a male who graduated in December to compete with the team. Anderson has issued no comment on his termination.
