Kentucky Extends Women’s Coach Mitchell

Matthew Mitchell, the University of Kentucky’s women’s basketball coach, who was named last season’s Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year, was rewarded with a five-year contract worth more than $600, 000 a year, UK announced Thursday.

“He has done a remarkable job in creating a culture of passion and competitiveness with a type of class that makes us proud to have him at the University of Kentucky, UK Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart said in the release.

In his three seasons at UK, Mitchell led the Cats to a 63-40 (.611) overall mark, including a school-record 28-8 mark last season. Last season, UK had the most wins in program history, a school-best 11 Southeastern Conference wins and the highest conference finish (second) in 28 years.

The contract was made effective on April 22, but UK failed to release the details of it until Thursday after an open records request by the Herald-Leader.

Mitchell said he was excited to spend many more years in Lexington.

I can’t think of a better place in the country to coach women’s basketball, Mitchell said. I feel this is a sign that they are confident in the direction of this program. We are working diligently every single day to instill honesty, hard work and discipline in our players, and that will remain our No. 1 priority.”
