So you think you want to play college basketball but have no idea how to prepare?

One local coach has started a business to help point area athletes in the right direction.

Gene Houston, the former Rock Valley College women’s basketball coach and an assistant for the men’s team, launched his new business and website, Maximum Potential Recruiting Services, two weeks ago.

“Ever since I stopped coaching I’ve been focusing on training and sports specific skill development, Houston said.

But I’m also fed up with some recruiters telling kids, ‘Hey, I’ll get you a D-I scholarship, ‘ when that’s not the level they should be playing at. This will give them the assistance they need.”

Like many other recruiting services, MPRS will help young athletes put together a recruitment portfolio. But Houston goes much further. He also offers an ACT prep class, financial aid completion assistance, clearinghouse completion assistance as well as individualized nutrition and training plans.

“My passion for starting this business was to give our student athletes in Rockford and surrounding areas the best opportunity to succeed at any level and in any sport, Houston said.

Local cheer teams place

The Belvidere North Coed Stunt Group comprised of Lee Baird, Madison Makeever and Lucas Howell took first place in its division at the Illinois Cheer Coaches Association Championships on Feb. 11 in Springfield.

North’s Thalia Arredondo, Kaitlin Brown, Natasha Diehl, Catherine Kotarba and Lexi Paddock also placed fourth in the All-Girl Stunt Group Division.

Guilford had success at the event, placing ninth in the Large Varsity Division. But the Vikings also were happy to see their feeder program from Eisenhower finish eighth in the Small Junior High Division.

Making it even more endearing is the fact that we are ‘sister’ schools, Guilford coach Shelli McGinley said.
