Alvin ISD Athletic Director Mike Bass believes in  making a difference in people’s lives. He is a role model for the youth who participate in the district’s Athletic Department. He simply walks the walk in a quiet, non-assuming manner.

Recently, a photo of Coach Bass appeared on a  Gulf Coast Regional Blood Bank flyer. The flyer boldly states, “Your blood type matters”.

Bass is also involved in the blood bank’s “Commit for Life” program.

To be a member of this elite organization, donors must commit to donating blood at least four times  per year.

Bass has been consistent in his donations. He first began donating blood in 1981 and since that time, he has donated 19 gallons of blood; more than 150 donations.

That means, he has donated just over eight gallons.

“I think he and his mother, Nan, have a race going to see who can be the first to donate 20 gallons,” said Rebecca Pharsardrescher with the blood bank’s Donor Recruitment Department.

His father, Judge Ogden Bass, is also a blood donor.

The Commit for Life program was birthed in 2003. It is a partnership between the community and the Blood Center that is focused on saving lives and permanently increasing the blood supply.

To meet the needs of the area community, The Blood Center established a collection goal of 333,000 units in 2010, with more than 1,000 donations per day. In 2007, the center collected a total of 291,319 units of blood and components, exceeding 2006’s record by more than 18,999 units.

In 2009, The Blood Center collected 331,298 units, surpassing the 2009 goal by more than 11,290 units.

Two blood drives are planned for the Alvin Independent School District in the near future.

On Friday, Feb. 3, a blood drive will be held in the Alvin High School Gym #3 from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. There will also be a drive at the district’s Administration Office, located on House Street, on Friday, Feb. 17 from 10:30 A.M. until 4:30 p.m.

Corrie ten Boon said it best, “The measure of a life, after all, is not its duration but its donation.”
