BELEN, N.M. (KRQE) – Undercover police officers looking for minors drinking underage at Belen High School’s homecoming football game last Friday caught assistant football coach Michael Duenas drinking alcohol on school property.

“He removed some alcoholic beverages from the truck, put it inside a McDonalds cup and proceeded to drink from that cup,” said Lt. Carl Padilla with the Los Lunas Police Department.

Duenas told police he coaches freshman football at Belen High. Padilla said Duenas is a paid member of the school’s coaching staff.

Police said Duenas, along with two other adults, were cited and asked to leave school property.

This is the second time a faculty member has been caught drinking, or drunk, at Belen High School. Earlier this month, math teacher Kathleen Jardine was fired for being very drunk in class. She blew a .22.

School district officials wouldn’t comment on whether Duenas still has a job with the district, saying it’s a personnel matter.

News 13 tried to get in touch with Duenas Tuesday evening, but he never got back to us.

Multiple law enforcement agencies participated in the Underage Joint Task Force on Friday night, including Los Lunas Police Department, Belen Police Department, Valencia County Sheriff’s Office, Bosque Farms Police Department, Isleta Police Department and Los Lunas School Resource Officers.
