Larry Eustachy isn’t the same man he was when he guided Iowa State to back-to-back Big 12 Conference championships, NCAA Tournament berths and a spot in the Elite Eight during his five seasons there.

No, he said Thursday, he’s a better man now after going through a very public downfall that led to his forced resignation as the Cyclones coach, a divorce and the admission that he was an alcoholic who needed help.

Eustachy, 56, introduced as CSU’s new men’s basketball coach during a news conference at Moby Arena, said he was “humbled” by that experience.

“I don’t think these things happen by mistake; they happen for a reason, Eustachy said. I think someone stronger than me put me in that situation.”

The situation he was referring to was a party with students at Missouri following a road game there with his Iowa State team in 2002-03. Pictures of Eustachy, with a beer in hand and his arm around female students, kissing one on the cheek, were published in the Des Moines Register. Photos and videos of him at a similar gathering of students at Kansas State also surfaced, and Eustachy was suspended and eventually forced to resign.

In just a few days, the California native went from the top of his profession to the bottom.

“I don’t think what Larry did deserved him losing his job over it, said CSU volleyball coach Tom Hilbert, a longtime friend of Eustachy’s dating to their days as young coaches at Idaho in the early 1990s. I think he got stuck in the internet. He was the first person to get busted in the internet age. He didn’t do anything illegal; it was simply a little bit of immaturity.”
