Daktronics Outfits New ODU Volleyball Center
Old Dominion University (ODU) renovated their former basketball practice gym as part of a $3.1 million project to create the new ODU Volleyball Center. The Volleyball Center includes new offices, locker rooms, team space, and a 900-seat competition arena that will house ODU’s newest program, women’s volleyball. The facility features products and an audiovisual system from Daktronics of Brookings, South Dakota. New technology includes a graphics display, sound system, scoring and timing system, a fixed-digit scoreboard, backlit scorer’s tables, and a digital content package.“The ODU Intercollegiate Athletics Department partnered early with Daktronics to develop a system that would work while renovating the Jim Jarrett Athletic Administration Building,” said Rick French, associate athletic director for facilities and operations. “We are very excited to implement this new audio system as well as the digital content package for the graphics board. The icing on the cake for us is the PTZ camera operating system that allows us to provide a high-quality video stream to our fans at home and the ability to grow that system for the future. This is a volleyball program that is the first in ODU’s history, so we wanted to make sure our game atmosphere matched the excitement of our patrons and the high caliber play of our student-athletes.”
The audiovisual system consists of a video display measuring six feet high by 10 feet wide with 10-millimeter line spacing and a Sportsound® 150 audio system. The video display can show headshots, statistics, graphics and animations, and sponsorship messages while the audio system will be integrated with the video and scoring system to provide full-range sound reproduction and clear intelligible speech.“Daktronics’ is proud to be a part of the new women’s Volleyball program at Old Dominion University,” said Charley Bocklet, Daktronics region manager. “The effort to renovate the Jim Jarrett Athletic Administration Building gymnasium through the COVID pandemic was no easy task. However, the finished product looks absolutely amazing and we couldn’t be more excited to see the new Monarch Volleyball team take the floor. This will be a great venue for both the players and fans for years to come!”
