Coach With Almost 300 Wins Facing Charges Of Raping Former Player

HADLEY — A successful girls basketball coach at a western Massachusetts high school has been charged with raping one of his players.

Prosecutors allege that Glenn Cooke, a longtime coach at Hopkins Academy in Hadley, raped the then 17-year-old girl in 2002 and 2003 while she played on his basketball and softball teams.

Assistant Northwestern District Attorney Jane Mulqueen tells The Daily Hampshire Gazette that the alleged victim recently came forward.

Cooke was indicted last week and is scheduled to be arraigned on four counts of rape next Tuesday in Hampshire Superior Court.

Cooke’s lawyer says his client denies the charges.

The 46-year-old Cooke has coached at the school for about 20 years and has nearly 300 basketball wins.
