Police are seeking two men who donned masks, crept up behind a Ferndale High School basketball coach outside his east-side home, and fatally shot him in the back of the head while his teenage son watched.

Shawn Patrick, 38, was retrieving a briefcase from his vehicle near the rear of his home in the 300 block of East Milwaukee about 9:20 p.m. Wednesday when two masked men approached him from behind, said Detroit Police Officer Dan Donakowski.

“The two men began firing, and (Patrick) was shot in the back of his head,” Donakowski said. “It was witnessed by one of his sons.”

Police do not have a motive for the killing of Patrick, who was the girls’ high school basketball coach at Ferndale High School. “We’re still investigating,” Donakowski said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Detroit Police Homicide Section at (313) 596-2200 or Crime Stoppers at (800) SPEAK-UP (773-2587).
