Bruce Weber Named Publisher Emeritus For Coach And Athletic Director Magazine

March 27, 2012 /
BROOKFIELD, Wis.—Coach And Athletic Director is proud to announce that Bruce Weber has been named publisher emeritus. He has been affiliated with the publication for 47 years.

Weber arrived from the University of Maryland in 1965 at what was then known as Scholastic Coach. He served as the assistant to legendary editor Herman L. Masin, beginning a 40-year working relationship between the two. His new role with Coach And Athletic Director includes handling special accounts and working on sponsorship projects.

Weber held various editorial titles, including sports columnist for Scholastic’s student publications until 1981 when he was appointed publisher of Scholastic Coach. He served in that position until his retirement in January 2009. When the title was sold Lessiter Publications in Brookfield, Wis., Weber continued to work as a consultant and is in his 47th year with Coach And Athletic Director.

During his 28 years as publisher, Weber managed all aspects of the business. A major component of his work there included the creation and management of many sponsored programs. One major achievement was the establishment of the Reebok High School Football Combines in 1993. These events were precursors to the high school combines that exist today. His best-known effort remains the establishment of the Gatorade National High School Player of the Year program in 1985, which is still generally accepted as the premier high school sports award.

Weber is the author of 97 books. He also wrote 65 episodes of the well-remembered Scholastic Sports Academy television series for USA network from 1981-83. The pioneering instructional series featured children learning from professional athletes in different sports and starred Hubie Brown and Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt, among others. The show in 1982 was awarded the prestigious ACT Award by Action for Children’s Television.

Weber has been honored with numerous awards by The Athletic Institute (Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association), the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, and The American Football Coaches Association, which in 1995 named Weber as an Honorary Lifetime Member.

Weber is married to the former Annette Katz with whom he shares two children and three grandchildren. The Webers reside in Delray Beach, Fla., and Paramus, N.J.
