Broken Arrow School District Undergoing six Athletic Field Projects

June 11, 2014 /
Six athletic field projects are underway in the Broken Arrow School District in Oklahoma, four of which will be completed this fall.

The projects support the district’s nearly 18,000 students. Hellas Construction is installing 475,000 square feet of Matrix synthetic turf, making it the largest turf project underway in the state. The fields will be used by multiple sports teams representing the Broken Arrow Tigers.

In addition, the development features an indoor synthetic turf field, which will be 40 yards long plus an end zone, offering space for winter workouts. The field will provide practice opportunities to soccer, band, football and other district teams.

“When we looked at the cost to maintain a grass field in our outdoor facilities combined with the fact that we can play on the fields 365 days a year, it made the decision to move to turf an easy one,” said Ken Ellett, executive director of athletic operations. “Moving to turf is better for the kids, our schools and the entire athletic program.”

The district awarded the project through a request for proposal process, which led to the selection of Hellas Construction. The contractor, with its headquarters in Austin, Texas, is known for their premium Matrix synthetic turf and has a long-standing history of providing synthetic turf fields to clients nationwide, including the Dallas Cowboys.

“Broken Arrow Public Schools is excited about the progress being made on the new turf projects at our sports facilities,” said Michelle Bergwall, chief operating officer, Broken Arrow Public Schools. “While all of the projects won’t be complete for some time, we look forward to our students being able to enjoy the new turf at Memorial Field, our softball field and at our track and field facility this fall when they return to school.”
