Boise State A.D. Blasts BCS

April 20, 2011 /

Boise State athletic director Gene Bleymaier, a vocal opponent of the BCS, again ripped college football’s postseason during a speech Monday to the City Club in Boise, Idaho.

“It’s truly amazing,” Bleymaier said, according to The Idaho Statesman. “The sport where the NCAA can generate the biggest revenue, and they end up giving it away for free. If the university presidents ever really truly understood what is happening, they would be in disbelief. The NCAA leadership over the past 30 years has been lulled to sleep while this transformation took place.”

The BCS set-up has proven both a blessing and a curse for the rise of Boise State football. For the good, a provision that allows teams from non-automatic qualifying conferences to receive automatic invitations to BCS games allowed the Broncos to play in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. A victory there over Oklahoma likely helped Boise gain an at-large spot in the 2010 Fiesta Bowl, where it beat TCU.

But the poll- and computer-driven system hasn’t brought the Broncos to the BCS National Championship Game despite four undefeated regular seasons in the last seven years.

In other Boise-related news, Bleymaier told his audience that Boise State would get more television viewers for regular-season games in the Mountain West than in the WAC. Although the MWC lacks a deal with ESPN, its games on Versus and CBS College Sports will draw a larger total audience for the season and bring in more money.

Bleymaier projected his school will make $12 million from television as part of the Mountain West, a sizable bump from $4 million in the WAC a year ago and $1 million in years past.

“What ESPN gave us was exposure,” he said, according to the newspaper. “They did not give us money to speak of. “

Also, Bleymaier reaffirmed his commitment to coach Chris Petersen by building the program in small ways at every turn.

“Obviously, we had a scare in January when Stanford came after him,” Bleymaier said, according to the newspaper. “The key to keeping Coach Pete around is to continue the progress we have made in our program and at the university.”
