Basketball: Shaka Smart’s three best inbound plays
DIAGRAM 1: Inbound Play 1 (A). From a box set, 5 screens for 4. 4 heads toward the ball-side corner. 5 then receives a backscreen from 2. 5 rolls to the hoop while 3 shifts for a possible outlet pass.
DIAGRAM 2: Inbound Play 1 (B). 4 takes two steps toward the corner, then turns around and screens for 2. 2 pops to the ball-side wing while 4 rolls to the inbounder. 1 passes to either 2 or 4.
DIAGRAM 3: Inbound Play 2 (A). This play starts with 5 posting hard, then cutting to the ball-side corner. 2 sets a backscreen for 3. 3 cuts to the hoop. 1 passes to 5.
DIAGRAM 4: Inbound Play 2 (B). 4 screens down for 1. 1 comes onto the court and zipper cuts toward the top of the formation. 2 floats toward the corner. 5 passes to 1.
DIAGRAM 5: Inbound Play 2 (C). 4 and 5 set a staggered, double screen for 3. 3 sprints off these screens and moves to the ball-side wing.
DIAGRAM 6: Inbound Play 2 (D). After 4 sets the screen for 3, 4 sprints to the opposite side of the court off a screen from 2. 1 passes to 4 for the open look.
DIAGRAM 7: Inbound Play 3 (A). 2 sets a backscreen for 3. 3 dives to the rim. 4 and 5 set a staggered screen for 2. 2 sprints off the screens to the ball-side corner.
DIAGRAM 8: Inbound Play 3 (B). If 3 doesn’t get the ball initially, 3 spaces to the weak-side corner. 5 then screens for 4. 4 curls to the ball-side elbow. 5 slips to the basket. 1 now has the option to pass to 4 open on the wing or 5 coming to the hoop.
