Curt Kaczor: Taking Time To Run

Coaching the cross country team isn’t as simple as telling everyone to run a five-mile loop for the day. Arrowhead girls coach Curt Kaczor, whose team won the Wisconsin state title last year, says he spends about “25 hours a week” just on his team during the season. His squad practices from 3-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9-11 a.m. Saturday if they aren’t competing.
“With writing my practice plans, meets, going over the lineups, it’s definitely about 25 hours a week and on top of that I go out and watch other teams race, so I know how a particular girl races, what she likes to do, her strengths and weaknesses,” he says. “I bring that information back to the girls and we do a lot of goal setting, visualization and watching the courses on tape, which leads to figuring out the best way to approach those meets.”
Kaczor says it’s worthwhile because his runners are invested in the program, so he’s not alone in his preparation.
“It’s not like I’m out there doing everything myself,” he says. “I have the girls working with me and it makes it a little easier when they’re buying into what we’re doing.”
