Before the start of the 2012-13 season, coach Blaine Taylor printed shirts for his Old Dominion players that read, Mission Possible in reference to the team proving doubters wrong to exceed expectations and in spite of the fact that the Monarchs could not earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament due to the school’s early move to Conference USA.

On Tuesday, that mission turned impossible when Old Dominion fired the 12-year coach, who owns the most wins in school history with a 239-144 losses record.

“This decision is not based solely on wins and losses, but a number of factors by which a head coach is evaluated, Athletic director Wood Selig said in a statement at a news conference on Tuesday. Taylor did not attend. At this point, in regard to our head men’s basketball coach, our student athletes need more mentorship, leadership and guidance. Our fans and alumni need encouragement. Our administration needs confidence in our leadership.”
