Former Purdue Assistant King Dies At 92
“To this day, there are former student-athletes who openly state that Coach Bob was the difference in their life, Purdue athletics director Morgan Burke said. He coached, mentored, listened and held people accountable – all with a sense of compassion.”
King, who was inducted into the Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001, was an assistant coach from 1960-74, working for Ray Eddy, George King and Fred Schaus. He recruited Purdue Hall of Famers Rick Mount and Dave Schellhase.
From 1974-93, King was assistant and then associate athletics director, providing guidance for hundreds of Boilermaker student-athletes as they fulfilled their academic requirements.
King also was executive director of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association, which he helped organize, and president of the Indiana Collegiate Coaches Association. He was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1986.
