FALL RIVER – Robb McCoy will not be returning to Bishop Feehan High School after all.
As coach of the Durfee High School football team.
The former Shamrock head coach, currently in his first season as head coach of the Hilltoppers, was suspended from that position by the Fall River School Committee Wednesday for an indefinite period of time for conduct detrimental to the program.
McCoy had guided Durfee to a 3-5 record this season, but apparently a series of incidents during practice resulted in a review of his coaching methods and suspension at this of time.
McCoy had sought a teaching position within the Fall River school system upon his confirmation as the head football coach at Durfee and was granted one. However, McCoy also sought tenure, but was denied and turned down the teaching post. McCoy was named to the coaching post by Durfee High AD Todd Whittemore after the Hilltoppers released Dave Morgado, who had served just two seasons.
McCoy had been the former defensive backs and wide receivers coach at Bishop Feehan High School under former Shamrock coach Jack Peavey and then served as the Shamrocks’ offensive coordinator when current Shamrock coach Curt Smith took over the head coaching position in 2004.
Smith left the post a year late to concentrate on his professional career and personal matters at the time and McCoy was elevated to the post the following year. However, McCoy was suspended from his coaching and teaching position at Bishop Feehan due to a violation of the Diocesan Code of Conduct.
McCoy then went on to coach the Norton High Lancers for three seasons, leading the Lancers to the 2008 Super Bowl, a loss to Arlington Catholic at Gillette Stadium.
McCoy had indicated to the Sun Chronicle earlier in the week that he enjoyed coaching at the Fall River school and that the Hilltoppers had shown improvement since the start of the season. “It’s just execution and effort,” said McCoy of Durfee attempting to play consistently good and competitive football.
The Hilltoppers had beaten Taunton (by one point), Southeastern Regional and Apponequet (by two), but had lost its last two outings, to Brockton (35-12) and Somerset (24-14).
