HAMPTON, N.H.—A New Hampshire school board has rejected a high school principal’s request to get rid of freshman sports next year.

Winnacunnet High School Principal William McGowan in Hampton sent an e-mail last Friday to faculty with the news. He said the board had voted to cut 10 percent from the $298,330 allotted for coaches and advisers in the school budget. The cost of freshman sports is about $28,000.

The Portsmouth Herald reports the board on Monday voted to fund freshman sports next year, but wouldn’t comment on where the district would find the money.

McGowan says he made the recommendation because freshman students would still have the opportunity to participate in sports at the junior varsity or varsity level. He says the other option was to eliminate non-athletic programs.
