Vermont Man Dies in Fight at Boys Basketball Game

Vermont State Police are investigating after a man died following a fight during a boys’ basketball game.

According to police reports, the incident occurred Tuesday evening at the Alburgh Community Education Center in Vermont around 7 PM.

vermontThe basketball game featured seventh- and eighth-grade boys from the towns of Alburgh and St. Albans.

A viewer sent us a phone recording of the alleged incident, which shows several people on a basketball court. People were tackled and shoved and punches were thrown in the video.

Officers say Russell Giroux, 60, of Alburgh, asked to be taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead there.

Giroux’s body is being taken to the medical examiner’s office to determine the cause and manner of death.

In a statement to the community, Grand Isle Supervisory Union officials say the district has arranged for additional support for students and staff and resources will also be shared that can be used to talk with students about violence and how to answer questions that may arise during these traumatic events.

“…Our immediate goal is to remind and educate our students and families that our school culture is one of family, community, and kindness. We need our students and community to commit to the positive culture that our school community expects and deserves…”
