If you listen to the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball players and coaches talk, a common theme seems to be the word different.

A different philosophy, a different style of play, different faces — and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

But one thing isn’t different — as the Golden Eagles wrapped up their first week of preseason workouts at the Hooper Eblen Center on Saturday morning, it was work as usual.

“This first week has gone really, really well, said new Tech women’s coach Jim Davis, who was hired back in July to replace departed women’s coach Sytia Messer. The effort is there. The attitude is there. The attentitiveness is there. We have to develop a little bit of consistency. Everything is new for everybody. Patience is not really one of my qualities, unfortunately, but I’m trying to remain patient. Our coaches have done a tremendous job with the teaching, breaking down videos and everything. I’m really pleased with the first week of practice so far.”

On paper, one of the biggest advantages for Davis’ Golden Eagles is having a large group of returning players.

“Well, that’s an advantage, Davis said, but unfortunately, it’s a different system. It’s like we’ve got 16 rookies. With the system we’re using and the coaching style, I guess that it is an advantage that they have game experience, but, in this system, everyone’s even.”

With the season starting up in just under a month, the team has some goals before they take the floor for the first time on Nov. 5 in an exhibition game against Lee University.
