An assistant high school swimming coach in Sacramento has resigned from his position after trying to pull a swimmer out of the pool by her hair following a race, according to Fox 40 News.

Geoff Capell was an assistant for Roseville High until he recently resigned from his post. He attempted to pull the captain of Roseville’s swim team – Jennifer McCarroll – out of the pool by her hair on April 29 following a race. Capell was reportedly upset at McCarroll and another swimmer for “intentional disqualification” in the race because their team was not going to move on in the championship, no matter what result they posted. Capell was a volunteer, who was working with his daughter, Kelly Capell, who is the varsity coach.

On Monday, May 2, Roseville Joint Unified School District director of pupil services Steve Williams apologized.

“We’re very sorry that this unfortunate incident occurred,” Williams said. “A physical response like this by any coach for any reason cannot and will not be supported.”

The swimmers could face discipline from coach Kelly Capell for their alleged tank job, but Geoff Capell could face a more severe penalty. The county district attorney is still deciding whether to file charges against the former volunteer assistant. McCarroll’s mother called police and according to the Fox 40 report, she felt an assault took place.
