Major Problems At El Dorado High (Texas)
EL PASO- Sanctions and suspensions. That’s what El Dorado High School is facing tonight. As we first reported over the weekend, several players have been kicked off the basketball team.
Their coach, Ron Vicencio, is already facing drug charges. Tonight, he’s denying he has anything to do with this latest scandal.Four players have been ruled ineligible to suit up this season. The District Executive Committee says the four were recruited to play for El Dorado, and that’s against the rules.
12 wins cut to seven, after a sophomore from last year’s team was ruled ineligible over the weekend.
“Those five district games he participated in and they won, they had to forfeit, says Pat O’Neill, the Assistant Superintendent of S.I.S.D.
The rules say a player cannot attend a high school if they’re recruited to play sports there. That’s why that sophomore was kicked off the team.
Three freshmen who were going to play this year also can’t for the same reason. We spoke to Coach Vicencio over the weekend, who denied recruiting anyone. The district agrees.
In talking to the students, all four of them said they did not meet Coach Vicencio until they started attending school, O’Neill told us.
All four players used to live in Mexico, meaning they might be here legally, or they might not. But it isn’t the school district’s job to figure that out.
It does not matter about their immigration status, we don’t look into that, their citizenship, we don’t look into that. If they provide proof that they living within the district, then you will let them into your school, says O’Neill.
Federal law says something like an electric bill is good enough to show residency. All four students proved they live in the district when asked by school leaders.
That means they can continue to attend El Dorado High School, citizens or not.
As for the length of the sanctions, none of the four can play high school sports for three years. Players who are eligible likely won’t play for Coach Vicencio this year.
He’s on indefinite suspension, pending an upcoming court hearing.
