New basketball coach Larry Brown said he is always on the lookout for potential players. On Thursday the Hall of Famer showed up at football practice, watching the Mustangs prepare for Sunday’s season opener against Baylor.

Asked if coach June Jones should be nervous about having his roster raided, Brown said, He’s not nervous; he offered.

Brown said he enlisted football players to help in practices during Kansas’ national title run in 1988 and would consider doing it at SMU, if a situation arose.

“Depending on how deep we are, June doesn’t have a problem with a football player playing for us, and I don’t either, Brown said. The way he spreads it out, shoot, it’s just like basketball.

“I spoke to his team, and he said ‘I’ll pick five of my guys and they’ll beat any five of your guys.’ I hope he was kidding.”
