Kentucky Honors Coach Hall With Bronze Statue

The University of Kentucky will honor former men’s basketball coach Joe B. Hall this morning with the dedication of a 400-pound bronze statue in front of the new Wildcat Coal Lodge, which houses members of the team.

Hall played and coached at Kentucky and once faced the unenviable task of replacing the legendary Adolph Rupp on the Cats’ sideline in 1972. Hall led the team to three Final Four appearances and the 1978 NCAA championship. He was named National Coach of the Year that season and was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame this year.

Hall was instrumental in the creation of the original Wildcat Lodge and has been immortalized in front of the new building by sculptor J. Brett Grill, who spent eight months creating a clay likeness of Hall based on photos taken in 1972-85. The sculpture was cast in bronze.
