Inside the world’s largest high school basketball gym

MaxPreps this week posted a video giving viewers an inside look at the New Castle (Indiana) gymnasium, which is the world’s largest at the high school level. If you have a few minutes, give it a look.

The 81,000-square-foot facility can hold up to 10,000 people with added bleachers, which is half the community’s population. When USA Today published a feature on the school a decade ago, it noted the gym had four concession stands, a 1/7-mile concourse running track and a six-acre parking lot.

Indiana University stars Kent Benson and Steve Alford graduated here.

This isn’t breaking news — the school has had the largest gym for more than 50 years — but it’s pretty great getting a look inside. We shouldn’t be at all surprised it’s in Indiana, where basketball trumps all.

It’s worth noting that 13 of the 15 largest high school gyms are in the Hoosier state. They don’t mess around.
