Indiana Coaches Concerned About new HS Girls Hoops Schedule
Indiana High School Athletic Association commissioner Bobby Cox recently got hit with a barrage of emails from girls basketball coaches about the sport’s new schedule.
He understands the concerns of some coaches, but firmly believes the IHSAA executive board made the correct call in approving a measure to move the 2015-16 girls basketball season up a week and start practices the same week as volleyball sectionals.
That assures the girls basketball finals will no longer conflict with boys basketball sectionals. It also allows the girls finals to be held annually at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
“We’re trying a good faith effort to improve girls basketball and if the only consternation there is half the schools might have some overlap in girls volleyball after Tuesday night of the sectional, then I think that’s not a bad price to pay, Cox said.
However several coaches worry it will lead to more players choosing one sport over another.
Western Boone has captured three consecutive volleyball Class 3A sectional volleyball titles. Stars girls basketball coach Rich Schelsky has already dealt with players missing the first few days of practice because of regional play.
“This to me magnifies it because you are guaranteed to miss the whole first week of practice and that doesn’t include if we would keep going in the volleyball tournament, Schelsky said.
