IHSA advises member schools during extreme heat warnings

While Illinois was under an extreme heat warning, the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) is reminding schools to how to beat the heat during training camp and fall tryouts.

IHSA policy requires the use of a wet bulb globe thermometer, which takes into account temperature, wind, humidity, sun, and cloud cover.

ihsaA recent story from News Channel 20 detailed the efforts the IHSA goes to in keeping member schools informed of the extreme heat in the late summer/early fall months.

Below is an excerpt from the News Channel 20 story.

“As we move through different zones of temperature ranges, then different things are allowed in practices, whether that be increased water breaks, or you know only allowed certain equipment on certain temperature ranges for football players, for example,” Stacey Lambert, assistant executive director of IHSA, said.

The green category of the chart allows for normal activities to take place and the black category means no outdoor activities at all. The yellow and orange categories have certain requirements for how long athletes can be outside and practice.

IHSA also said they have given schools instructions on how to stay safe in the heat for games and practices and if there’s a heat-related emergency situation.
