Bo Ryan Severely Limits Options For Transfer

Wisconsin forward Jarrod Uthoff wants to transfer to another school, but Badgers coach Bo Ryan is severely limiting his options.

Uthoff, a 6-foot-8 forward, announced last week that he would look for a new school after redshirting as a freshman at Wisconsin this past season. He said he liked Wisconsin but didn’t feel the offense fit his game.

Ryan didn’t seem to take the news well, restricting Uthoff from talking with teams in the Big Ten, Marquette and Iowa State.

Uthoff told Metro Sports Report on Monday night in his hometown of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, that Ryan has added all of the Atlantic Coast Conference to the banned list. That brought the total to 25 schools unable to contact Uthoff.

NCAA rules prohibit schools from speaking with potential transfer students without the permission of their current school.

Uthoff, the 2011 Mr. Basketball in Iowa, told Metro Sports Report that ACC schools were included on the restricted list after Virginia, coached by former Wisconsin assistant Tony Bennett, sought permission with speak with him.

Asked why Ryan was being so restrictive, Uthoff said, You have a better guess than I do. I’m not really sure.

Ryan hasn’t publicly commented on the transfer.

Meanwhile, Uthoff said he’s appealed to the compliance office at Wisconsin to lift the ban. If his request is refused, he could appeal to the NCAA.

At this point, Uthoff is left with Creighton as the only school of interest with an available scholarship. He plans to visit there within the next week.
