Beilein’s Son Named Coach At W.V. Wesleyan

Patrick Beilein, the son of Michigan basketball coach John Beilein, was hired as head basketball coach at West Virginia Wesleyan, a Division II school in Buckhannon, W.V., on Sunday.

The college confirmed the hiring in a news release.

“I have always wanted to be a head coach at the collegiate level and I thank President (Pamela) Balch and Athletic Director Randy Tenney for this opportunity, Beilein said in a statement. I am really looking forward to the challenges in front of us and am very happy to be coaching the Bobcats, as well as coming back to the great state of West Virginia.”

Beilein, 29, takes his first head coaching job after spending last season as the director of basketball operations at Bradley.

He has also served as a graduate assistant at Dartmouth and, prior to that, was on his father’s staff at Michigan — also serving in a grad assistant role.

He takes over a WVWC program that went 22-9 last season. He replaces former Eastern Michigan coach Jim Boone, who departed for Delta State.

The Beileins faced off against one another for the first time last winter, when Patrick and Bradley visited the Crisler Center for a non-league matchup.

“It’s going to be a little bit different on a personal level, but not just with my dad, but with his assistants and all the guys on the team that I know really well, Patrick told AnnArbor.com before that game. It’s going to be a lot of fun just to take it in. It’s something I’ll look back upon and remember in my coaching career, the first time going against my dad.”
