According to the commissioner of the Indiana High School Athletic Association, student-athletes at Union High School (Ind.) are free to find another place to play next year.

IHSAA Commissioner Bobby Cox told the Greene County Daily World in an email that all Union athletes, regardless of where they attend school next year, will have full eligibility.

“Rule 19-6.1d makes a provision provided the student does not transfer prior to the closing of the school,” he said. “In other words, Union students must finish at Union this school year then transfer to the IHSAA member school of their choice —students transferring in this manner will be granted full eligibility at their new school.”

Questions have arisen among pundits and parents alike about whether or not the transferring students would have to wait a calendar year to be eligible to play at the varsity level no matter what school they chose to attend.

In past situations when a student-athletes transfers to another school, the school they left must give a written release to the other school before the student is eligible to play.

Some schools have been reluctant to grant such waivers, especially when a transfer within the school district has been the case or when the waiver would allow a student-athlete to compete against his old school.
