How SPORTAFLEX is helping facilities adapt with lightweight, portable solutions

(Sponsored) Manufacturing modular, portable and lightweight fencing systems designed for athletic and recreational playing fields, SPORTAFLEX offers easy-to-install fencing that meets all relevant ASTM standards. SPORTAFLEX features long-lasting fencing in two sizes, consisting of individual aluminum alloy frames with vinyl mesh attached, as well as a patented safety feature to reduce the risk of injury in collisions.

As athletic facilities shift from grass to turf fields, Jason Goodin, president of SPORTAFLEX, leads the way with flexible, safety-focused fencing solutions. Goodin shares how SPORTAFLEX is adapting to industry trends while prioritizing performance, longevity and player safety.

Q. What makes SPORTAFLEX an effective solution for facilities transitioning between grass and turf fields?

A. We’ve seen a very large trend from grass to artificial turf. The problem with using a portable fence on artificial turf is that many turf companies do not want you to penetrate the artificial turf because it could void the warranty by compromising the integrity. Moisture and mold could also grow underneath the fencing, so people are ultimately looking for a fencing solution that sits on top.

At SPORTAFLEX, our modular system with steel-based plates do not require penetration through the artificial turf. The steel base plates weigh 38 pounds, and our fence panels are only 12 pounds, since they’re made of aluminum and mesh. That ratio gives it strong stability even in windy conditions, up to 25 mph or more. Plus, we have a patented spring system that ultimately allows better flexibility in windy conditions, enhancing player safety.

Q. How does SPORTAFLEX impact player safety and performance on both grass and turf fields?

A. Our grass system is equally as high-performance as our artificial turf system, which includes the base plates, so we have in-ground posts for grass applications.

For grass fields, it’s a permanent system that goes into the ground and it’s capped off, so it’s at sprinkler height. When the fence is not in use, you can’t even see it. It should be at sprinkler height and you can run over it and not even notice it, but then when you’re ready to play, you pop off a cap, you put our steel anchor down in, and that’s what receives the feet of the fence panel, and then you set it up and rinse and repeat. So, the grass applications are just as high-performance as the artificial turf.  Most importantly, our systems can be set up in less than an hour.

Q. How does maintenance differ when using SPORTAFLEX compared to traditional field solutions?

A. The traditional field solutions normally have a shorter shelf life, and there’s really no maintenance you can perform on those products, since they’re one piece, and they’re not modular. So, after two or three seasons, we hear from a lot of our customers that they end up having to buy a whole new 100-foot section, or 160-foot section, where our fence panels are just shy of 10 feet, constructed of aluminum on the outside of the frame and mesh on the inside — all those parts can be replaced.

Whether there’s damage from players over time or if there’s a weather event that damages a few panels, we can ship them out. It only takes one small set screw to replace the entire frame — many of our customers order a couple of pieces, maybe a couple of tops, a couple of sides, and maybe two or three mesh every few seasons, for regular maintenance. We typically see about a 10 to 12-year life in our fence with regular maintenance.

Q. What advice would you give those considering SPORTAFLEX?

A. We have a lot of different options and we’re here to solve problems for facility managers and athletic directors who need a portable home run fence solution, whether it’s for the little guys and youth leagues, softball or even full baseball arcs that are set up on a multipurpose field — we have many different solutions for any type of application.
