Texas A&M Looking To Limit Longhorn Network
Texas A&M has cited a 1994 NCAA rules interpretation in a dispute over the Longhorn Network televising high school games.
Athletic director Bill Byrne confirmed the school’s stance in an email. Big 12 ADs are scheduled to meet in Irving to discuss the network’s plans involving high school broadcasts and showing more than one Texas football game this season. Commissioner Dan Beebe put both proposals on a temporary hold recently. The NCAA opinion involved athletic magazines and newsletters that were classified as a representative of the college. The information was first reported by CBS Sports . “What the LHN proposes about high school broadcasts is illegal if ESPN is media,” Byrne wrote. “I suspect it is.”
At league media days, Beebe said he was uncertain if the conference would take immediate action or wait for an NCAA summit Aug. 22. Either way, momentum seems to be building against high school games on the network.
