The University of New Mexico and Lobo men’s basketball head coach Steve Alford have inked a 10-year contract through the 2022-2023 season.

UNM Vice President of Athletics Paul Krebs announced the agreement Wednesday, which includes a $240, 000 raise next year.

Alford’s base salary, other compensation and retirement already added up to more than $1 million, KOAT recently reported, with the opportunity to earn more in incentives.

News of the new contract came as the Lobos are preparing for their first game in this year’s NCAA Tournament March 21 in Salt Lake City.

The length of the new contract would make Alford the longest tenured coach in Lobo basketball history.

“When you look at the successes of the team on the court, in the classroom and in the community, it was easy to come to this decision, Krebs said. Coach Alford is running a program that is something the entire state of New Mexico can be proud of.”

Alford is the only coach in the history of UNM to win 22 games in each of his first six seasons. The team has qualified for postseason play in all six seasons, including three NCAA Tournaments. Under Alford, the team has won 155 games in six years, an average of just under 26 games per season.
