Former UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian dies at 84

Former UNLV men’s basketball coach and Hall of Famer Jerry Tarkanian died Wednesday. He was 84.

Tarkanian had been in and out of the hospital over the last 10 months and was admitted to a Las Vegas hospital Monday with a respiratory condition and infection.

Danny Tarkanian confirmed his father’s death on Twitter.

“Coach Tark, my father, the greatest man I have ever known, passed today, to take his place in heaven, he wrote. I will miss him every day of my life.”

Jerry Tarkanian was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2013. He coached at Long Beach State and Fresno State, most notably spending 19 season with UNLV. While there, he compiled a 509-105 record, winning a national championship in 1990.
