The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports that about two-thirds of all lightning deaths in the U.S. are associated with outdoor sports and recreational activities, and the most vulnerable time to be struck by lightning is between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., which coincides with most outdoor athletic events.
