Texas considers allowing HS coaches to lead 7-on-7 teams

Texas’ University Interscholastic League (UIL) will examine a system that would allow high school football coaches to lead 7-on-7 teams during the offseason.

UIL Executive Director Charles Breithaupt told The Dallas Morning News there is “great concern” that players and parents are spending money to be coached by those who are unqualified to lead teams. UIL Athletic Director Susan Elza added that coaches are worried street agents are finding their way into 7-on-7 leagues, and college coaches are beginning to turn to them instead of high school coaches during the recruiting process.

Rules prohibit high school coaches from coaching their teams during the offseason, and the article notes that any change from the UIL would likely be applied to all sports.

From the article:

The UIL still has a number of factors it needs to determine before a putting an offseason-coaching system in place, such as a possible increase in pay for the extra hours the coaches work and whether the UIL would need to oversee and sanction offseason activities such as 7-on-7 football.

“This is not an easy fix,” Breithaupt said.
