A staggering 96 percent of the players participating in this weekend’s Super Bowl played multiple sports in high school, according to an analysis from TrackingFootball.com.

The scouting service released its breakdown Tuesday, showing that 102 of the 106 players making up the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots rosters played, at minimum, two high school sports. Of those players, 35 percent played three or four sports.

In addition to football, 58 percent of players participated in track and field, followed by basketball (43 percent), baseball (13 percent), lacrosse (7 percent), wrestling (5 percent) and soccer (4 percent).

Sport specialization has been a hot topic in recent years. In Coach & Athletic Director’s annual AD survey, it was ranked the third most concerning issue in high school sports. There’s no shortage of coaches who prefer their athletes to participate in other sports — some require it — but some parents and athletes believe specialization is the best route to a college scholarship.
