South Dakota considering six-man football

South Dakota’s athletic association plans to survey its members this fall to gauge interest in six-man football

According to The Associated Press, schools across the state have struggled with declining enrollment and geographic challenges within their sports programs. Six-man football would help smaller schools and those that have been unable to field a full varsity program.

The South Dakota High School Activities Association will commission a survey at its March convention. If there’s interest, the board of directors could later be asked to consider a formal proposal to launch six-man football in 2019.

Five states — Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Texas and Wyoming — sanctioned six-man football last year, according to the article. Nebraska will offer the sport in 2018.
