NFHS Breakdown of States Playing Winter Sports

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) recently released its data on modifications of winter sports made by state associations across the country in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The post from the NFHS, shared last week, is being updated as more information comes in.

In the sport of basketball, 32 states — mostly coastal states — have modified its season to some degree. From the New England region down the Northeast corridor to North Carolina, state athletic associations have modified the upcoming basketball season. The same can be said for Pacific coast states like Washington, Oregon, and California, as well as northern states like Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota.

The nineteen other states, comprised mostly of the sun and rust belt regions, as well as midwestern states, have made no changes to its basketball season. Some of those states include Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana, as well as the southern states from Texas to South Carolina.

In the sport of wrestling, 38 states have modified its season with 11 others making no changes.

Pennsylvania, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Indiana, Tennessee, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, and Idaho are all moving forward with wrestling as originally scheduled, according to the data from the NFHS. All of the states making no changes to its wrestling season, also are not making changes to its basketball season.

In late October, the NFHS held a media briefing breaking down the states that were able to hold fall sports to some degree.

According to the numbers obtained by the NFHS, 30 states played football as scheduled this fall, with five more states — Alaska, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Wisconsin — playing a season without crowning a state champion. The remaining 15 states, including the District of Columbia, delayed football until later in the year.
