Nebraska expands hazing ban to high schools

Nebraska’s anti-hazing law will now cover elementary, middle and high schools.
The state’s hazing ban previously only covered colleges, but incidents at the high school level prompted state legislators to expand it. According to The Associated Press, Sen. Dan Hughes introduced the bill in response to a hazing incident involving a high school wrestling team in his district. The students were punished by the school, but state law didn’t allow authorities to pursue charges.
The law also includes new forms of harassment and sexual assault to the definition of hazing. The crime is punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.Gov. Pete Ricketts signed the bill on Wednesday.
