Montana considers transgender athlete policy

January 14, 2015 / Athletic Administration
Montana could soon become the next state to adopt a formal policy on transgender athletes.

The state athletic association is expected to vote on the proposal Monday, Jan. 19. If approved, the Montana High School Association would be responsible for reviewing whether transgender athletes are eligible to play a sport in the gender they identify with. The policy would take effect July 1.

Butte High School Principal John Metz told NBC Montana that individuals would be asked to fill out a form that’s forwarded to the state association. A panel including physicians and psychologists would ultimately determine whether the athlete can compete.

Montana would become the 34th state to adopt a transgender policy. Arizona and Minnesota recently approved similar policies.
