Miami HS drops varsity football because of low participation

A Miami high school has announced it will drop varsity football due to low numbers, weeks before the season is set to kickoff.

Football3Archbishop Curley will continue with its junior varsity program in hopes of fielding a varsity team for the 2017 season, according to Florida High School Football. This is a problem not unique to Archbishop Curley, as high schools around the nation have grappled with the challenges of their football programs as concerns over concussions continues to rise.

According to the National Federation of State High School Associations’ (NFHS) latest participation survey, 107 fewer schools played football during the 2015-16 school year when compared to the year prior. Participation numbers or budgetary concerns are often cited as reasons for cutting the sport.
