Former NFL coach Mike Sherman joining high school ranks

Former Green Bay Packers and Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman will begin coaching high school football in Massachusetts this fall.

Sherman was most recently the offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. He spent last year as a consultant for NFL and college teams, according to a report from Sports Illustrated.

Sherman said he no longer wanted to put his family through relocating every time he accepted a new job, leading him to take the head coaching position at Nauset Regional High School (Eastham, Massachusetts). He lives in Dennis, about 18 miles from the school.

“I felt after Miami I couldn’t put my family through another move,” Sherman told the Cape Cod Times. “My wife Karen has put up with a lot in regard to my career and was happy to have unpacked her last box. We’ve been coming here almost every summer over the last 30-plus years as a family so we felt this was a natural fit for us to call Cape Cod home.”

“It took me a while to pull the trigger,” Sherman said. “It hasn’t been an easy decision because I wanted to make sure I was all 100 percent in. The kids deserve that from their coach. I’ve loved coaching in the NFL and college for the last 33 years, but I am definitely looking forward to working with the kids at Nauset.”

Sherman replaces Keith Kenyon, who left to take an assistant principal job. Kenyon spent five seasons with the program, leaving with a 31-24 record.

Sherman last coached high school football at the Worcester Academy in Massachusetts in 1980.
