Colorado could double field in prep basketball playoffs

Colorado’s athletic association will vote this spring whether to double the size of the high school basketball playoffs in two classes.

PrintThe Colorado High School Activities Association’s basketball committee approved the proposal Thursday, recommending brackets in the Class 4A and 5A playoffs be expanded from 32 to 64 teams. According to an article from CHSAAnow.com, the idea is to give teams with injured or ineligible players earlier in the season a fighting chance when playoff time draws near.

The top 16 teams would receive first- and second-round byes, and the next 16 teams would receive only a first-round bye. The remaining 32 teams would compete during the first week of the tournament.

“If you look at those other classes, everyone has a chance to play their way into the tournament,” committee chair Paul Cain told CHSAAnow.com. “In 4A and 5A, we don’t have those opportunities, so if you have some kids who were or ineligible at the start of the season, they may never get that chance to play their way into the tournament. This provides that chance.”

League champions will be seeded among the top 32 teams in the tournament, while an RPI system determines placement for the remaining teams. The CHSAA’s legislative council will vote on the proposal in April and, if approved, the new format would go into effect during the 2017 postseason.
