California Collegiate Athletic Association suspends NCAA games for fall

While universities and colleges in Texas and schools from the Southeastern Conference push forward with plans for a collegiate fall sports season, California has taken a very different approach.

On May 12, the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) suspended NCAA games for the Fall 2020, according to a report from KCRA3.

The CCAA is a 12-member league of NCAA Division II athletic programs, including Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State East Bay, Cal State LA, Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State San Bernandino, Cal State San Marcos, Cal Poly Pomona, Chico State, Humboldt State, San Francisco State, Sonoma State, and Stanislaus State.

“With utmost consideration for the health and welfare of our students, coaches, staff, faculty, and communities, CCAA member institutions have determined that NCAA sports competition will not occur during the fall of 2020,” the CCAA said in an issued press release.

The decision came shortly after California State University chancellor Timothy P. White announced many Fall 2020 semester classes will move to an online model due to the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting the 23 satellite schools.

“This approach to virtual planning is necessary for many reasons,” White said in a statement on May 12. “First and foremost is the health, safety, and welfare of our students, faculty and staff, and the evolving data surrounding the progression of COVID-19 – current and as forecast throughout the 2020-21 academic year. This planning approach is necessary because a course that might begin in a face-to-face modality would likely have to be switched to a virtual format during the term if a serious second wave of the pandemic occurs, as forecast.”

Earlier in May, the Texas A&M University System, the University of Texas System, and Texas Tech University are preparing to not only reopen its campuses in the fall but also hold fall sports. Both Baylor University and Texas Women’s Univesity have previously stated that the schools also plan to resume on-campus activities in the fall.
