Ark. may let private school athletes on public school teams

Arkansas legislators have introduced a bill that would allow private school students the chance to participate on sports teams in their public school districts.
House bill 1243 is designed to provide more opportunities to students at private schools. The proposal would allow those students to join a team at the public school in their district if the sport they wish to play isn’t offered at their private school.
Details are slim and the state athletic association has not issued a statement, but it’s hard to believe this wouldn’t complicate matters for public schools — enrollment, classification, participation numbers. According to KTHV, students would be required to participate in one class at the public school where they’re playing sports, but it isn’t clear how that would tie into their eligibility.Recently, a lot has been made of home-schooled athletes participating in public school sports, but this is something entirely different. If the Arkansas Activities Association releases a position statement, we will let readers know.
