120-game win streak ends for high school basketball team

February 13, 2015 / Basketball
The Fairfield High School (Montana) girls basketball team lost for the first time in nearly five years on Thursday, ending its state record 120-game winning streak.

HoopThe team lost to rival Choteau High School, 50-38. It was the squad’s first loss since March 2010, ending the nation’s longest prep basketball winning streak. The team is tied for the country’s sixth longest high school girls winning streak, according to the Great Falls Tribune.

The article included a few nice details of how each team reacted after the game.

The victorious Choteau girls:

Choteau’s girls stampeded through the school back to a foyer and gymnasium full of ecstatic fans. The streak — in its 120-game entirety — was over, and they were the ones do to it.

“I told them to try to act like they had been there before,” Choteau head coach John Shepherd said with a smile. “That’s hard when you haven’t been there before.”

Choteau had lost 13 of the 120 games, second only to the 16 Conrad dropped during The Streak to the four-time defending state champion Eagles.

“I remember every one,” Shepherd said.

 And Fairfield:

Tears flowed freely as they left the court, but Fairfield exited the dressing room as a unit, all smiles and focused on Friday’s matchup with Shelby.

“Mainly we just kind of joked around with each other to make us feel better,” point guard Allie Steinbach, whose older sister and cousin both won games for the Eagles during The Streak, said. “We just came out as a team.”

Both teams were as classy as you can imagine, each complimentary of the other program. That’s always refreshing to see.
